Edwin: This year I began Pre-K and turned four. I can now count to 20,
but twenty-eleven and twenty-twelve still manage to confound me. My
apparent obsession with trains continues; actually it is a frighteningly
sophisticated thought experiment on the effects of obsessional behaviour
on parents when combined with random crying and whingeing, and non-stop
talking. I hope to publish my results in a couple of years when I
finally learn to write. High points of 2004 included my birthday visit
to the Sacramento Train Museum and getting my own N-scale layout
complete with engines and carriages - or at least that's what I want my
parents to think, he, he, he....
Merinda: I have been enjoying K/1 with Ms Dorinda, particularly learning
to read and write and the opportunity to expand my string of beaus to
include older men (1st Graders). My artistic output continues to
increase, and a steady hand with the paintbrush has come in very handy
in applying lipstick and eyeshadow as well. I have decided to conduct
my own research in line with my brother's, and have chosen horses as my
subject matter, with particular attention to parental reactions to
sticky-taping numerous pictures to the wallpaper and leaving expensive
plastic horses in apparently careless positions where they're likely to
get stepped on. High points of 2004 include seeing 2 of my pictures
hung at the Sonoma County Fair and turning six.
Jonathan: Forget the Chinese Year of the Horse; 2004 was the Scott
family year of the expensive toy, aka the year of conspicuous
consumerism. Major new purchases included a new digital camera, a home
theatre system (so we never have to go to the movies again), a DVDR, an
Apple iBook G4 to go with DSL (one need never miss an opportunity to
browse and buy even when one is in bed). As further evidence of too
much cash and too much leisure I completed four new train layouts, a
horse layout, and a garden table. If I could just get work to agree to
telecommuting, I might never have to leave the house again.
High points? Lots of fabulous food, parties, visitors, toys and
making up for too few movies in the last few years!
Kay: 2004 was the year I began to remember what life was like B.C.
(Before Children) when both Merinda and Edwin started school 5 mornings
a week in August. Although I still volunteer 8 hours a week in their
classrooms, I have enjoyed having some free time to pursue my love of
writing, and have completed 2 creative writing courses and begun
entering contests this year. I also enjoyed scraping the rust off my
desktop publishing skills to take on the school newsletter. High points
of 2004 include having my name published in the Bohemian as an
honourable mention in their annual writing contest, and discovering I
can make Jonathan and my classmates laugh with my short stories.
