Proportional-Integral-Differential Train Controller II
The controller at right is the prototype of the model PID684 Train Control, the
top model in the second generation of digital controllers I have designed.

The PCB is more complicated than the first generation, because
it has automatic reversing, current and power supply sensing,
an analog meter for readout of various functions such as
engine RPM and peak axle torque,
operation over a wider supply range,
and the controller has provision for remote control via RS232 serial link.
This train controller has these features:
- Controls speed of a locomotive very precisely,
using PID feedback control;
- Low cost and lower complexity than the analog versions;
- Simulated inertia as well as feedback;
- Inertia can be adjusted or switched off;
- Automatic station stops in response to button press or signal from track;
- Indicates halting, timeout, low or high supply voltage, short circuit, etc.;
- Times out to stop a train that has inadvertently been left running;
- Control constants can be user-changed to suit different scales;
- Automatic reversing in center-off, shunting mode;
- Reversing only when stopped in cruise mode;
- Adjustable timeout time;
- Meter can read out RPM, Torque, Thrust or Speed Error;
- Four user setting memories;
- Adjustable voltage averaging.
