The California Thai is at 522 Seventh Street, in the brickworks building, West off Mendicino. Like the name implies, it is California-influenced Thai food. The decor is spacious-modern, and compliments the style of the food well.
The blend of styles gives rise to some interesting dishes. We tried two appetisers, "Thai quesadillas", which turned out to be excellent samosa-variants that looked as if they had been ironed flat, and a dish (whose name escpes me) that was the Thai equivalent of sang choy bow, and most delicious. The leaves of this last were thin, English spinach we think, and the contents a wide range of neatly chopped vegetable and nut ingredients too numerous to remember. We highly recommend this one. We also had a squid-based Thai salad, a massaman chicken curry, a noodle dish (to suit one of the diners who is a vegetarian-this is a good choice of restaurant if you have vegetarians in the party, and they even offer a completely vegetarian menu) and duck prepared in a speciality-of-the-house way. All were tasty, though not of the strength we associate with Thai, and the salad in particular owed a lot of inspiration to cole slaw rather than Thai salad. The steamed squid in it, however, was perfectly cooked.
Dishes ranged from $6 to $12 approximately, and the servings are sufficient that four of us ate well but quite cheaply, about $60 without drinks.
The California-isation means that a lot of traditional Thai elements are missing. The cutlery is not bronze, and rice is not served from a separate (and overly ornate) silver pot by the server. However the service left the impression that the place was run by the owner's family, efficient, and not intrusive.
I would give this restaurant 7/10.
